Google Ads bringing clicks but no enquiries? These are the usual causes.
Clicks are easy to buy. Enquiries are not. Six specific reasons an SME campaign burns budget without producing customers — and how to tell which one is yours.
A campaign that produces clicks but no enquiries is not a mystery. It is almost always one of a small number of causes, and you can usually identify which within an hour of looking at the right screens.
Here they are, roughly in the order we find them.
1. You are paying for people who were never going to buy
Open your Google Ads account and go to the search terms report — not your keyword list, the search terms report. This shows what people actually typed before your ad appeared, which is frequently very different from what you thought you were bidding on.
You will usually find three kinds of waste:
- Research, not buying. Someone searching "how to fix aircond myself" is not hiring you. They want a YouTube video.
- Job seekers. "aircond technician salary" and "aircond company hiring" both trigger ads for aircond services.
- Competitor and supplier searches. People looking for wholesale prices, not retail service.
Every one of those clicks costs the same as a real customer's click. Adding them as negative keywords is usually the single biggest improvement available in an underperforming SME account, and it takes an afternoon.
2. Your keywords are too broad
Broad match keywords let Google decide what counts as "related" to your term. Google's incentive is to spend your budget; yours is to spend it well. Those are not the same incentive.
If you sell commercial refrigeration and you are broad-matching "refrigeration", you are paying for people looking for a fridge for their kitchen. Tighter match types cost more per click and far less per customer.
3. Your ad promises something your landing page does not deliver
Click your own ad. Actually click it — pay for the click, it is worth it.
Does the page you land on continue the sentence your ad started? If your ad says "Same-Day Aircond Service in Seremban" and the visitor lands on a generic homepage listing eight services with no mention of same-day or Seremban, you have broken the thread. They came for one specific thing and have to hunt for it.
Ads cannot fix a weak page. They just deliver more people to it faster.
4. Your conversion tracking is not recording anything
This is more common than it should be, and it is the most damaging because it makes everything else unmeasurable.
Check it directly: submit your own enquiry form, then look in Google Ads to see whether a conversion was recorded. If nothing appears, your campaign is not failing to produce enquiries — it may be producing them and telling you nothing.
Without working conversion tracking, Google's automated bidding is optimising toward the wrong goal, usually clicks. You are paying a machine to get you more of the thing that is not working.
5. Your budget is spread across too many campaigns
A common pattern: five campaigns, each getting a small share of a modest daily budget, none of them accumulating enough data for Google's bidding to learn anything.
One campaign with the full budget behind it will outperform five starved ones. Pick the service with the highest margin and the clearest demand, put everything there, and expand only once it is working. Splitting budget early feels like covering more ground; in practice it means nothing gets enough fuel to take off.
6. Your ads run when nobody can answer
Look at the hours your ads are running versus the hours somebody actually replies to enquiries.
For most service SMEs, an enquiry at 11pm on Saturday is worth much less than one at 10am Tuesday, because by Monday the customer has called someone who picked up. If nobody works weekends, consider whether your budget should.
How to tell which one is yours
Work through it in this order — each step is cheap and rules out a whole category:
- Check conversion tracking first. If it is broken, nothing else you look at is trustworthy.
- Read the search terms report. Wasted spend shows up here immediately.
- Click your own ad. Mismatch between promise and page is obvious once you experience it as a visitor.
- Check budget concentration. Are you funding one campaign or starving five?
- Compare ad schedule to response hours.
What good looks like
A healthy SME account is usually simpler than an unhealthy one. Fewer campaigns. Tighter keywords. A long negative keyword list that keeps growing. Landing pages that match their ads. Conversion tracking that has been tested, not just installed.
